Maple Valley Capoeira Batizado – 2026

We are happy to announce that Maple Valley Capoeira will be hosting its third Batizado and Troca de cordãos on the weekend of April 24th – 25th, 2026. We are excited to celebrate this event with our students, families and friends. Please join us. Axé!

What is a batizado/troca de cordão?

A batizado or baptism is when capoeiristas from all throughout the capoeira community come together to celebrate students receiving their first capoeira cordão. Subsequent promotions are known as a “troca de cordão” or changing of cord and can also be part of the batizado. During a batizado, a student receiving their first cordão plays a visiting Professor/Contramestre/Mestre in a roda and is welcomed or baptized into the capoeira community. As students reach higher belt levels they may play with more than one teacher before they receive their next cordão as a recognition of their progression.

I went to my first class in 1998 hoping only to find a fun activity to help maintain my overall fitness as I had previously achieved in the Marine Corp, I found more than I had anticipated. I immediately felt the passion, the beauty, and rhythms of Afro-Brazilian culture, along with the art, philosophy, and physical challenge of Capoeira. Over the last twenty-five years, I have dedicated myself to improving my skills as a capoerista and helping the ever growing community of United Capoeira Association.
Throughout my travels in capoeira, I have had the opportunity to meet, train, play and get to know some of the most well-known teachers and mestres in the world of Capoeira including Mestre Acordeon. I received my training under the supervision and mentorship of Contramestre Dondi, a student of the renowned capoeira teacher, Mestre Acordeon of the United Capoeira Association. With my training, I have been able to understand the philosophies of Capoeira and the beauty of Afro-Brazilian culture has achieved a deeper sense of community, a richer understanding of self, and a greater understanding of the importance of family and relationships. Capoeira has had a positive impact on all aspects of his life, at home and at work.
I currently teach a capoeira series at Movement Culture, Casa de Cultural and I work on the renewed school expansion effort through working in various programs with TUSD, UofA. & Pima Community College .”

Event Location and Schedule:

Please come in whatever uniform/attire is appropriate for you and your school to attend event workshops and batizados (e.g whites, uniforms, abadas, cordão/corda, etc), . Event t-shirts will be available for those that pre-registered for Saturday when you check in at the registration table. Please reserve them to be worn for the Batizado & Troca de Cordãos.

Copies of some of the digital documents are available here if you wish to review them prior to registering for the event.

Additional Information:

Housing – We have extremely limited housing available so we highly recommend an AirBnB or other locally available accommodations. We can help direct or provide recommendations if you have questions or are looking for other folks that are also looking for housing. Thank you for understanding
