Maple Valley Capoeira Batizado – 2025
We are happy to announce that Maple Valley Capoeira will be hosting its second Batizado and Troca de cordãos on the weekend of May 16th – 17th, 2025. We are excited to celebrate this event with our students, families and friends. Please join us. Axé!
What is a batizado/troca de cordão?
A batizado or baptism is when capoeiristas from all throughout the capoeira community come together to celebrate students receiving their first capoeira cordão. Subsequent promotions are known as a “troca de cordão” or changing of cord and can also be part of the batizado. During a batizado, a student receiving their first cordão plays a visiting Professor/Contramestre/Mestre in a roda and is welcomed or baptized into the capoeira community. As students reach higher belt levels they may play with more than one teacher before they receive their next cordão as a recognition of their progression.

Event Location and Schedule:
Friday – No Uniforms / School attire
The opening workshop and roda will be focused on the styles and teachings of Mestre Rã, one of the founders of the United Capoeira Association, who recently passed away in late 2024. We would like to take advantage of this opportunity to share a bit of his legacy with our capoeira community and hope that everyone, regardless of which school or style of capoeira they come from, can share in his memory. Please come in non-uniform/no school affiliation training attire so that we can simply be together as a capoeira community, ready to support, experience and learn from each other. Mestre Acordeon and Mestre Rã had two very distinct styles of capoeira, yet they came together and created something very special and that is what we would like this opening evening to reflect. If you have any memories or experiences with Mestre Rã, we would love for you to come and share them. Here is a link to a tribute video that was prepared by Mestre Galego, A Tribute to My Teacher Mestre Rã.
